50th Anniversary DW2

Former Royal Navy colleagues Mark and Ian return to the place where their naval careers began, celebrating 50 years since they first trained together at HMS Daedalus.

In 1976, two young men arrived at HMS Daedalus to begin their Royal Navy training. Fifty years later, Mark and Ian have returned to the site to revisit old memories, reflect on their careers and see how this historic waterfront is evolving.
Their visit brought back memories of life on the base, the training that shaped their careers and the friendships that have lasted half a century.

Mark and Ian spent around 17 weeks at Daedalus undertaking their initial training before moving on to further specialist aircraft training in Cornwall. Their careers subsequently took them to different bases around the country, working with different aircraft types. Ian went on to work with Sea King helicopters, while Mark worked with Wessex helicopters before spending more than 20 years on the Sea Harrier circuit.

Despite following different paths, Daedalus remained an important part of their naval careers. Both returned to the site for further training and qualifications as they progressed through the ranks.

One particularly memorable moment came in 1977, when the pair returned to Daedalus for the Queen’s Silver Jubilee celebrations. Thousands of personnel were accommodated in tents around the airfield, with aircraft positioned across the site ahead of a flypast over the Royal Fleet Review in the Solent.

For Mark and Ian, being part of that occasion was a highlight of their time in the Navy and a reminder of the site’s important role in naval aviation.

Their visit also prompted memories of everyday life at Daedalus, from collecting their fortnightly pay to spending time with colleagues around the base. They recalled receiving around £28 every two weeks in Sea Plane Square, with plenty of change left over after paying for their accommodation.

Returning five decades later was a nostalgic experience, with familiar buildings bringing back memories of their time on site. Their visit offered an opportunity to share those stories while learning more about the future of Daedalus Waterfront.

The visit provided an opportunity to discuss the site’s heritage, including its protected buildings, historic aircraft hangars and the ongoing work to secure a sustainable future for this distinctive location.

For Mark and Ian, seeing the site again after 50 years was a chance to reconnect with a formative part of their lives. For Daedalus Waterfront, their stories are a valuable reminder that the site’s history is not simply held in its buildings. It lives on through the people who trained, worked and built friendships here.
